Floods in Singapore 25 June 2010 (Fri)

Another torrential downpour early on Friday morning once again triggered flash floods across the island. However, this time, it seems Orchard Road was spared — instead areas like Upper Thomson Road, Bugis and Jalan Boon Lay seemed to be hardest hit.
Heavy rain was also reported in Changi, Eunos, Jurong East, Tampines and Sims Avenue.
A tree reported fell outside Orchard Central, near the Somerset MRT station on Orchard Road, blocking three of the five lanes. But no floods were reported in the shopping belt.
The Straits Times reported that four people were injured when falling trees or tree branches landed on the cars they were in.
Channel News Asia also reported that SCDF personnel had to be called in to evacuate 18 children from a childcare centre at Telok Kurau Lorong G. SCDF personnel were also activated to rescue a passenger and a driver trapped in a taxi which was stuck in floodwaters at the junction of Macpherson Rd and Kampong Ampat.
As expected, the downpour also caused morning rush hour traffic on all the major expressways in Singapore to come to a virtual standstill.
Social media sites like Facebook and micro-blogging site Twitter were awash with flood photos and users exchanging pictures. A dedicated channel, #sgflood, was also set up on Twitter for users to track each other’s comments and photos.
Twitter user artiwill said, “Maybe they should just dam “Sungei Thomson” on both ends and promote it as the next frontier of waterfront living.”
Another called DrenBoy quipped, “Who says Orchard has all the fun?” while nat_sora said “Yuan Ching Rd was a little river when I went through it 30 minutes ago!”

On Thursday, the PUB announced that it is spending $25,000 to install five debris-trap gratings at Stamford Canal to prevent future floods. All five will be in place by today.
However, the spate of recent floods begs the question if there needs to be a major re-look and overhaul of the drainage system across the island.
Last year, Minister for Environment and Water Resources Yaacob Ibrahim described the flash foods at Bukit Timah as a “freak” event that happened “only once in 50 years”.
We’ve now had two in barely over a week.

Later.. along Kampong Bahru... behind my home.. another fallen tree and it blocked the entire 2-way road. And auxiliary police had to direct the vehicles to make U-turns and travel another route.

iPhone 4 is coming to Singapore!

In separate announcements on Tuesday in the wake of the official unveiling of Apple's fourth iteration of the sleek touch-screen handset, StarHub and M1 said they will have the handset on sale within the next few months. SingTel too is 'in the final stages of discussions with Apple' to bring the handset to Singapore, a spokesman said.
While none of the operators would elaborate just how soon they will begin selling the thinner but more powerful handset, a slide presented during Apple chief executive Steve Job's announcement at the firm's annual Worldwide Developers Conference at the Moscone West convention center in San Francisco, named Singapore as one of 17 countries that will receive shipments in July.
Local pricing of the handset, which goes on sale later this month in five countries including the United States for between US$199 (S$282) to US$299, was unavailable. However, OCBC Investment Research analyst Carey Wong, does not expect the telcos to engage in a price war to sign up customers.
This is, he said, because many iPhone fans are already locked into two-year contracts, many inked after StarHub and M1 began selling iPhones just over six months ago. Up until late last year, SingTel was the only official source of iPhones. So, it might not make business sense to dangle big discounts if the potential market is limited.
All three telcos have, in fact, have seen their bottom lines hit by the iPhone. Because of the demand for its handset, Apple can command high price for its handsets. Telcos, on the other hand, have no choice but to pay what Apple wants - or lose customers to rivals that have the handset. Nor can telcos simply pass the high handset cost to customers, forcing them to subsidise the handset heavily - iPhone subsidies was one of the main reasons StarHub's margins fell to its lowest level since its 2004 listing.

10 Reasons Why You Should Buy the Apple iPhone 4.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAcwpmOV9qkzSQIH_x_4lsnnm-_IIm1ny65bkJo4f7peIT6-KDRl8INAOVbGsVUzbjrY4rte7UZQyHQDRjQey13wv-oZPlTx3GRG46oD4JYhLL9D18t-sYvgfo4fHlxpPmYK8TkW5Iwdw/s400/10+Reasons+Why+You+Should+Buy+the+Apple+iPhone+4.jpg)
This is one of the coolest features to be available in the fresh iPhone. Sure, it only works on a Wi-Fi network, but that's a small price to pay for such a useful thing that will let one enjoy live conversations with their loved ones (as long as they also have an iPhone 4).
Reason 2 – Retina display
The iPhone 4 sports the most advanced display any handheld Apple product has ever come equipped with. So, the 3.5-inch Retina display has 960 x 640 pixel resolutions (namely 326 pixels per inch), which makes it absolutely a beauty to look at. In other words, you won't even be able to distinguish the pixels on the screen, and all you'll be provided with will be a smooth, clear, high-definition image.
Reason 3 – Improved design
Let's face it, the iPhone 4 looks much better than its predecessor. Sure, there are less curvy surfaces and there's plenty of glass, but the look is very modern and cool. Oh, and there's also a white version, for all those Mac users out there who wanted to accessorize their computing system with an Apple handeld of the same color.
Reason 4- Improved camera, LED flash and photo shooting options
This might convince quite a few users to go for the iPhone 4. Practically, the handset now sports a much more serious sensor (5 megapixels), which is also backlit, meaning that the overall quality of the photos taken in low-light conditions will most likely increase. Plus, the presence of an LED flash (which doubles as an LED video light), tap to focus and 5x zoom will also make the iPhone 4 quite popular for taking good-quality photos.
Reason 5 – HD video recording and editing
This is a major update, and one many people have been waiting for. So, with the fresh iPhone, one will be able to easily record videos, edit them (via the iMovie app for iPhone) and then upload them onto the Internet. In other words, they'll have a full-fledged multimedia studio right in their own pocket, without having to cough up extra cash for this.
Reason 6 – Longer battery life
During his keynote speech at WWDC, Steve Jobs promised significantly improved battery life for the iPhone 4, which is certainly a plus. I mean, we're talking about seven hours of talk time on 3G networks, up to 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi, and up to six hours on 3G, up to 10 hours of video playback and up to 40 hours of audio playback. Pretty impressive stats, don't you think?
Reason 7 – Enhanced gaming capabilities
The iPhone 4 sports Apple's own A4 chip that makes it a lot more powerful than the 3GS (let's not forget, the same CPU powers the company's iPad tablet). Moreover, besides the built-in accelerometer, which we'd already grown accustomed to from the previous models, the new handset also packs a gyroscope that will enable 6-axis motion sensing such as up and down, side to side, forward and backward and pitch and roll, making it a lot more suitable for gaming purposes.
Reason 8 – Integrated with the iBooks app
The iPhone 4 will offer access to a feature that's already present in the Kindle, for example. Practically, users will be able to start reading a book on their iPhone 4 and then continue to do so on their iPad or iPod touch, for example.
Reason 9 – It runs the iOS 4
One of the most important advantages brought about by the fresh iPhone is its capability to run the iPhone OS 4 (rebadged as iOS 4), which should bring about a whole new set of cool features, including multi-tasking, folders, etc. The operating system will certainly be a huge step forward for Apple, while the handset will enable users to enjoy this experience at its best (iOS 4 will probably be available on the 3GS as well, but it won't run as fast).
Reason 10 – Fanboyism
The last reason (but for some people, the most important) is sheer fanboyism. I mean, there are some people out there who'd buy anything that Apple comes up with simply because it's an Apple product and they love the company and its philosophy. And these people will certainly go for the iPhone 4 as well, especially taking into consideration the other reasons listed above.
These are just a few reasons why one should buy Apple's new iPhone 4, but if you've gotten more, please don't hesitate to share them with us via this article's comments section.
You will enjoy this phone!
Apple iPhone 4 is so cool!

Two cameras, two views.
iPhone 4 has two cameras: One on the front, which focuses on you. And one on the back, which focuses on everything else. FaceTime lets you switch back and forth between them at any time during a video call. All you have to do is tap a button.
