The 26-year-old Chicago native Chris Medina won the hearts of American Idol judges and fans not only by his heart-touching songs and incredible performances but also by his strong love to his fiancée though she suffered severe brain damage, which left her nearly paralyzed, and facial fractures in a horrific car accident on her way home.
The October 2009 accident happened just before two months the time the couple planned to walk down the aisle. Medina proposed to her at the Starbucks where she worked as a barista in 2007.

Though many people complained about the so-called “Gorkey” effect, American Idol Season 8’s contestant, whose wife passed away due to a congenital heart disease four weeks before his audition, it is clear that Chris Medina’s love to his disabled fiancée is true, he along with her mother became her full-time caretakers and paid for her medical costs.

Despite Medina was not named in Idol's top 24 this year, this couldn’t stop the local musician from making his dream come true, affording for his fiancée’s medical costs and believing Juliana Ramos’s full recovery. Idol’s Judge Jennifer Lopez burst into tears when voting him off the show.

After his elimination, Medina went into the studio with hitmaker Rodney Jerkins to record the song, “What Are Words” which made it debut on iTunes and spotted No. 24 on the iTunes top 200 charts. Particularly, the proceeds from downloads would go towards the Juliana Recovery Fund, a foundation for his fiancée Juliana Ramos.
