Quick and Affective Treatment For Strabismus Conditions in Adults!

Visual impairment is usually brought on by blindness or lack of depth perception, but the reasons for this are different. During a person's adult life, different conditions of health can cause what most people refer to as 'lazy eye'. In the field of optometry this condition is called strabismus.

To be more exact, this is where one eye does not follow the synchronize nature with the other eye. The health and injury conditions causing this are:

stroke
diabetes
brain tumors
head trauma

This condition can range from mild to severe and depending on the severity will determine how much it can impact someone's vision. The condition primarily affects depth perception.

Indicators and Solutions:

For those that begin to show symptoms of this problem, they are often not aware of it. By looking at video and photos of one's self, they can see a significant coordination problem.

This can cause some self-image issues at the most but can be corrected and depending on the situation, can be covered by insurance - if it causes a problem. The direction of the eye gives the optomitrist a better sense as to what ocular muscles may have been impacted by the suffered condition.

Strabismus is severe when there are problems with hand to eye coordination and double-vision. A combination of eye-wear, surgery and sight rehabilitation is sometimes necessary to solve the problem.

Surgical Procedure:

The common practice of ocular check up is the way that the physical will diagnose a patient before surgery. After the physician knows how to approach the problem the surgical procedure is started and very quick.

A modified and adjustable suture is added during the surgery that places a permanent 'slipknot' to re-align the eye. Invasive strabismus surgery for adults is easier to do, unlike children who still have to go through the brain's visual development that is 'programmed' from the use of both eyes. This kind of surgery uses devices that will not intrude with the muscle fibers around the eyes.

Benefits:

Previous sutures would require more adjustments after surgery, such as the same day or next day, to see if it required additional re-alignment.

With the new process, whether horizontal or vertical, the slipknot requires minimal support and recovery time is much shorter. It is also more comfortable for the patient unlike previous techniques. If an adjustment does have to be made than it is easier. The suture is also able to be absorbed with reflects the type of medical ingenuity behind the process.

Many have said that strabismus is a condition that is only 50% recoverable with surgery, for those that have real problems with their sight. With invasive surgery the fix is fast and 100% affective.

Setting It Straight!

Approximately 4% of American children have strabismus, which is a condition of the eye muscles. Eyes must be aligned precisely for optimal vision, but strabismus causes the eyes to point in different directions. One eye may be focused properly, but the other eye cancels this out by turning upward, outward or downward. Often the appearance of the eye condition is subtle, and parents do not take note of it immediately in infants or toddlers.

ADULT STRABISMUS
Adults can acquire the condition also, but an adult reaction is quite immediate. The adult is accustomed to the precise alignment of former binocular vision, and the double images suddenly presented with strabismus are distressing.

TREATMENTS
Various forms of treatment for strabismus are indicated, such as patches over an eye, glasses or surgery to realign the eye muscles correctly. Straighteyes.com offer help on strabismus by performing the surgical intervention sometimes required for this visual problem.

SURGICAL INTERVENTION
As an ophthalmologist, Dr. Veronique Jotterand is board-certified in pediatrics and surgery. Her practice offers specialized eye care for children. She has performed over 7,000 strabismus surgeries in 25 years of service. Her expertise is notable for the precise surgeries she performs and her concern and compassion for her patients.

HOW IS THE SURGERY PERFORMED?
Any surgery on the eye is met with realistic concern, especially if a child is about to undergo that intervention. Dr. Jotterand and other strabismus surgeons use a technique that is minimally invasive and remarkably effective to improve focus and depth perception. This procedure involves carefully placed, adjustable sutures that balance the eye muscles so that they are perfectly aligned.

RECOVERY
Strabismus surgery can require a local anesthesia with a sedative or a general anesthesia, depending upon the extent of the operative course. The patient will require monitoring for a time after the surgery. Adults will need to curtail driving privileges for approximately two days and may need a week to recover before returning to the workplace. Double vision is a common phenomenon which can last for that time frame, seldom longer.
Children recover quickly and can return to school routines within two days.
Post-surgical pain is quite minimal for children and over-the-counter medication may suffice. Older children and adults may have more discomfort and require a prescription.

AFTERWARDS
The advantages of strabismus surgeries have been clear for many years. Sometimes glasses are required after the surgery, and sometimes more than one intervention is required. However, the benefits of exacting visual correction are unparalleled.

SNOW IN SINGAPORE?

(Click on image, for another video from Andy Giger)

I believed what you just saw this afternoon around 3pm or from the video was NOT SNOW.. although you saw ice stones dropping from the sky! Affected areas were Bukit Batok, Jurong and other western parts of Singapore.

I've read from somewhere that the Singapore government has prepared cloud-seeding equipment to try to induce a downpour/ rain to help remove record levels of smog.

Smoke from fires on the Sumatra Islands has contributed to thick smog in Singapore and Indonesia.

They also mentioned that rain would provide relief from the fires, which are difficult to fight because peat on the forest floor is burning up to 13 feet below ground, The Jakarta Post reported Friday.

"If there is no rain then the haze could last for weeks, or even months, as we try to generate artificial rain," Indonesian Forestry Ministry General Secretary Hadi said.

Well the cloud-seeding may be good in one way but it may also cause a disaster... :P

Clean Your Lungs with Apples!

Came across this from Men's Health Weekly and I find it really good info to share.

Your lungs and your liver are putting in extra hours to keep the haze from paralysing your body. Scrub them clean of the garbage the smog has placed in your body.

Lungs
Your lungs are the only internal organs that are continuously exposed to the external environment. Every breath you take brings in whatever debris happens to be floating in front of your face.

To deal with that floating junk, your lungs are lined with hair-like cilia, which sweep out the pollutants, bacteria, and viruses that you breathe in. Your lungs also perform the most essential task of extracting oxygen from the air and swapping it for carbon dioxide. Continued exposure to airborne gunk (like those the prevailing winds have brought in from Indonesia), however, can interfere with these processes, causing inflammation that may trigger bronchitis and asthma-like symptoms.

Scrub Your Lungs Clean: Eat some apples. People who chomped on the fruit were 33 per cent less likely to have a chronic phlegmy cough than those who ate the least, according to a National Institutes of Health study in the US. The pectin and antioxidants in the peels can reduce inflammation in your lungs.

Also, stay inside when ozone levels are high. This pollutant causes inflammation that can narrow your airways. "If you're unusually winded after a run, you could be sensitive to ozone," says Dr. Norman Edelman, the chief medical officer of the American Lung Association. Check out the PSI reading at the NEA website, and work out indoors when the Air Quality Index is moderate or higher.

Liver
In addition to processing booze, this 1.6kg gland – the largest in your body – has at least 250 functions. Primarily, it filters bacteria and pollutants from your blood. It also produces bile, a viscous goo that breaks down fat for digestion and absorption. “These functions begin to suffer when alcohol injures your liver or a poor diet causes extra fat to build up in your liver,” says Dr Paul Martin, the chief of hepatology at the University of Miami. When fatty liver occurs in people who don't drink heavily, it's associated with the same risk factors as those of metabolic syndrome: obesity, diabetes, and high triglyceride levels.

Scrub Your Liver Clean: Hitting the gym for an extra 10 minutes a day helps ensure that your liver stays on top of its responsibilities. In a 2009 study in Hepatology, people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease who increased their exercise by 60 minutes a week for 3 months reduced their levels of four enzymes that indicate liver problems. “Exercise removes fat from the liver," says study author, Dr Jacob George, a professor of gastroenterology and hepatic medicine at the University of Sydney.

But you can easily undo your gains if you drink too much. While the occasional beer is fine, avoid binges of five or more drinks on a single occasion. So you’d want to make sure you’re not seeking shelter from the haze in a joint.
